Silicon Valley Says Goodbye, Santa Cruz Says Hello
With the possibility of a recession in 2023, many of the large Silicon Valley businesses have warned of pending layoffs. Facebook / Meta cut 11,000 jobs Wednesday in the biggest tech layoff of 2022. The tech industry has seen a string of layoffs this year in the face of uncertain economic conditions. Layoffs come as digital advertisers are cutting back on spending and rising inflation curbs consumer spending. By some estimates, as many as 45,000 job cuts will smack our northern cousins. The pandemic caused many businesses to expand hiring during 2019-20 as they increased online commerce. And now the party is over.

Trades Day 2022
Registration is open for exhibitors and sponsors for 2022 Santa Cruz Trades Day. We encourage trade, industry and post-secondary education and training program partners to participate and inspire local students to build a career in construction. Take part in an exciting opportunity to pass along the things that excite you about your work. This event is made possible through the generosity of sponsors who underwrite the expenses associated with renting the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium facility.
Students are encouraged to bring their resumes with them and take advantage of a resume review session. Two weeks before the event, instructors will receive information about pre-assignment students are able to complete. This pre-assignment will give students a glimpse into what companies will be at the Trades Day event.
Schools, youth groups, and individual students are invited to register for a two-hour block, starting every 30 minutes from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students will go through a safety tailgate talk upon arrival before entering the Exhibition Halls.
