Medical Assistant (MA) Road Map

Medical Assistant

Is Medical Assisting for You?

Does the thought of blood, bodily fluids or giving shots make you squeamish? Thousands of others, just like you, are pursuing rewarding medical careers in positions that do not require any of these activities!

Administrative and front office medical assistants perform a wide variety of duties that do not include working with blood, bodily fluids or giving shots.  Examples include - scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing and coding for insurance purposes and interacting with the public.

There are plenty of advancement opportunities to higher wages that DO NOT require working with blood – Medical Records & Health Information Technicians, Billers and Coders, Medical Office Managers, and Electrocardiogram or EKG Technicians, to name a few.

Other Factors to Consider

Whether you are looking for a career that requires intense levels of interaction with the public, or a more paper-work, detail oriented position where interaction with people is limited – Medical Assisting could be the career for you. Administrative and Front Office Medical Assistants interact with the public all day. Clinical and Back Office Medical Assistants experience little interaction with the public.

While not all employers require Medical Assistants be certified, taking the extra step of becoming certified will lead to greater job opportunities and advancement opportunities.  Medical Assisting training introduces students to the basics of billing and coding only. For a billing / coding career much more in depth billing / coding training is required.
